How the LAP-BAND® System works.

The LAP-BAND® System has an adjustable silicone ring that is surgically inserted and placed like a belt around the upper part of they stomach. The ring — or band — is connected by thin tubing to an access port just below the skin.

Through this port, your surgeon adjusts the fit of the LAP-BAND® System by inflating or deflating its inner lining with saline solution meet your individual needs.

Properly fitted, the ring helps create a new, small upper stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below. This new upper pouch is only able to hold a small amount of food at a time, so you can feel full sooner and stay full longer even though you are eating less. The LAP-BAND® System also controls this size of the opening between the two parts of the stomach and regulates the flow of food from the upper part to the lower part. In doing so, it helps control your appetite.
